Let me ‘fess up right now: I am not an expat.
Well, I am.
No, I’m not.
Y’see, what I am is a Scot who has lived and worked more than half her life in England.
My accent is Scottish and I’m called Fiona. My Significant Other sounds equally tartan and hails from Glasgow, that Scottishest of cities.
When I visit my parents in Ayrshire, I ‘go home’ to see them. Even though I have never lived where they live now, and do not have my own room there.
When I leave them, I ‘come home’ to where I live!
I am firmly embedded in my English community. I’m a parish councillor, a member of the village hall committee, chair various school appeal panels for my County, work for the Campaign to Protect Rural ENGLAND, host a folk club in my local pub and at one time even considered training to become a Magistrate.
The first thing people usually ask me is: ‘What part of SCOTLAND are you from?’
I am not an expat. But I am. No I’m….
Oh, bother!
